Day 1: Arrival and Exploring the City Center
Welcome to Graz, Austria! After settling into your hotel, you can set out to explore the city center and take in some of the interesting architecture the city has to offer. The Hauptplatz, the city’s main square, is a great place to start. Here you can find the Rathaus (City Hall), a Renaissance style building with its distinct clock tower. Another popular building to visit in the city center is the Schlossberg, a hill that offers some of the best views of the city. You can take the elevator up to the top or work off your jet lag by hiking to the summit.
Day 2: Visiting the Eggenberg Palace
Start off the day by visiting the Eggenberg Palace, a beautiful Baroque palace that was built in the 17th century. The palace houses several museums including the Alte Galerie, which has an impressive collection of paintings that date back to the Middle Ages. After exploring the palace, take a walk through the lush gardens surrounding the palace and relax in the serene atmosphere.
Day 3: Exploring the Murinsel Island
Today, head to the Murinsel Island, a man-made island on the Mur River that is connected to the mainland by two footbridges. This floating structure houses an amphitheater where concerts and events take place and a café where you can sit and watch the boats pass by. Take a boat tour on the river to see the city from a different perspective and get a glimpse of the picturesque countryside.
Day 4: Wine Tasting in the Surrounding Countryside
Take a day trip to the nearby vineyards and indulge in some of the region’s best wines. The Styrian wine region is known for its white wines and you can spend the day tasting different varieties. Several wineries offer tours of their vineyards and wine cellars, where you can see how the wine is made and learn about the history of the region.
Day 5: Shopping and Culinary Delights
Graz has a plethora of shopping options, ranging from boutiques to department stores. Take a stroll down Herrengasse, a pedestrian street lined with shops and restaurants. You can find a variety of shops here, from high-end boutiques to specialty stores that offer unique goods. For lunch, stop at one of the traditional Wirtshaus, the local Austrian taverns, and try some of the regional cuisine.
Day 6: Discovering the Joanneum Quarter
The Joanneum Quarter is the artistic and cultural center of Graz and is home to several museums and galleries. Spend the day exploring the Kunsthaus Graz, the city’s modern art museum, or the Natural History Museum, which houses a large collection of minerals and fossils. The Styrian Armoury, located in the Joanneum Quarter, is the world’s largest historic armory and is well worth a visit.
Day 7: Nightlife in Graz
End your trip on a high note by exploring the city’s nightlife. Graz has a vibrant music scene and you can find live music in several venues around the city. For a unique experience, head to one of the city’s many atmospheric pubs and enjoy some Austrian beer along with some of Graz’s traditional bar snacks such as deep-fried cheese or sausages.
