Day 1: Arrival and City Tour
Welcome to Salzburg! After checking into your hotel, take the afternoon to relax and recover from your trip. In the evening, take a walking tour around the historic Old Town, admiring the baroque architecture and learning about Salzburg’s rich history. You’ll see iconic landmarks like Schloss Mirabell, Salzburg Cathedral, and Getreidegasse, the famous shopping street where Mozart was born. End your tour with dinner at one of Salzburg’s cozy traditional restaurants.
Day 2: Eagle’s Nest Tour
Today, you’ll visit the Eagle’s Nest, a mountaintop retreat built for Adolf Hitler during World War II. While the history of the site is controversial, the views from the top are breathtaking and the alpine scenery is unforgettable. Your guided tour will take you to the top of the mountain via a scenic road and an elevator carved out of the rock. You’ll have time to take in the views, explore the summit, and have lunch at the restaurant. You’ll return to the city in the evening, just in time for dinner and drinks.
Day 3: Hohensalzburg Fortress and Salzkammergut Day Trip
Spend the morning exploring Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Europe. After learning about Salzburg’s medieval history, take an afternoon trip to the Salzkammergut region, known for its crystal-clear lakes and charming towns. You’ll visit St. Wolfgang, a picturesque village on the shores of Lake Wolfgang, and take a boat ride on the lake for stunning views of the surrounding mountains. End the day with dinner at a lakeside restaurant before returning to Salzburg.
Day 4: Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains
In the morning, visit Hellbrunn Palace, a beautiful baroque palace built for Salzburg’s archbishops in the 17th century. The palace is most famous for its Trick Fountains, which are fed by a network of hidden water jets and are designed to surprise and delight visitors. Take a guided tour of the palace and gardens, which include a zoo and several tranquil grottoes. In the evening, you can take a stroll along the river and try some of Salzburg’s delicious street food.
Day 5: Mozart’s Birthplace and Modern Art Museum
Start the day by visiting Mozart’s Birthplace, now a museum dedicated to the life and work of the city’s most famous son. Here, you can see displays of his instruments, letters, and original scores, as well as learn about the composer’s life and family. In the afternoon, visit the Museum of Modern Art, which has a great collection of contemporary art from around the world. The museum’s location, perched high on a cliff overlooking the city, also provides some of the best views of Salzburg.
Day 6: Salzburg Zoo and Beer Garden
Spend the day at the Salzburg Zoo, which is home to a wide variety of animals from around the world, including elephants, tigers, and monkeys. The zoo is set in a natural forest and has plenty of walking trails, as well as a petting zoo for younger visitors. In the evening, head to a traditional beer garden for dinner and drinks. Salzburg has a great beer culture, and you can sample some of the city’s best brews while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.
Day 7: Departure
Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Salzburg and head back home. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping or a leisurely breakfast. Make sure to take one last stroll through the Old Town and snap some final photos of this beautiful city before you go. Safe travels!
