Trip to Aarhus, Denmark
Day 1: Arrival and exploring the Latin Quarter
Upon arrival, head to your accommodations and take some time to settle in. After that, head out to the Latin Quarter, a charming and colorful part of the city that’s perfect for exploring on foot. The narrow, cobblestoned streets are lined with cafés, restaurants, and independent shops that sell everything from handmade jewelry to vintage clothing. While you wander, be sure to look up at the brightly painted facades of the buildings, which add to the area’s charm. You’ll also find several noteworthy museums, galleries, and cultural centers, such as the Aarhus Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century.
Day 2: Den Gamle By and ARoS Aarhus Art Museum
Start your day by visiting Den Gamle By, an open-air museum that recreates a Danish town from the 19th and early 20th centuries. You can wander through the streets, popping into shops and homes that have been furnished with period-appropriate decor, and watch craftspeople demonstrate their skills. After you’ve had your fill of history, head over to ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, which is known for its impressive contemporary art collection. The museum’s main attraction is the “Your Rainbow Panorama,” a circular walkway that offers panoramic views of the city through its rainbow-colored glass walls.
Day 3: Moesgaard Museum and forest walks
Today, take a trip to the Moesgaard Museum, which is situated in a scenic spot overlooking the water. The museum’s exhibits explore the region’s history and culture, from the Vikings to present day. Afterwards, explore some of northern Europe’s largest and oldest forests just outside of town, including Marselisborg Forest, Riis Skov, and Skjoldhøjkilen. Marvel at the ancient oak trees, enjoy the hilly terrain and numerous walking paths.
Day 4: The architectural wonders
Aarhus is a city that is constantly evolving, and there are several interesting buildings to explore. Your first stop should be the Dokk1, Scandinavia’s largest public library, which boasts an impressive design, sea views, and a lovely rooftop terrace. You can then head over to the late 19th century Marselisborg Palace, where local visitors flock to see the changing of the guard with which the Royal Family uses the palace as a summer residence. Finally, conclude the day at the new Jutland Art museum - Viby building stunningly designed to reflect the lake that runs adjacent to it.
Day 5: Botanic Gardens and Musikhuset Aarhus
This morning start your day by visiting the Botanic Garden, which is also home to the Greenhouses, that houses plants that cannot survive in the dutch climate. The outdoor garden is filled with various flowers (season permitting), plants and trees. Take a walk around the lake and grab a coffee at the café. Afterward, take a stroll over to Musikhuset Aarhus, one of Scandinavia’s largest concert halls, which hosts everything from pop concerts to classical music performances.
Day 6: Aarhus Bay and Beaches
On your sixth day in Aarhus, start with a pleasant urban walk or bike ride along the 25km Aarhus Bay coastal path. Preferably starting in the North and working your way all the way down south to Ballehage Strand near forest Marselisborg or alternatively just take in the views at the popular east beach or Bellevue beach.
Day 7: Shopping and farewell
Your final day in Aarhus can be spent doing some last minute shopping. Aarhus is home to many international and independent shops and offers the perfect opportunity to pick up some unique souvenirs prior to farewell drinks at one of Aarhus many bars, cafes, and restaurants. Don’t forget to seek out some of Denmark’s local craft beers and pastries like a classic Danish pastry (kanelsnegl) or an apple cake to accompany your last hurrah!
