Trip to Heidelberg, Germany
Day 1: Arrival and Heidelberg Castle
You will arrive at Frankfurt International airport and can take a rental car or the train to Heidelberg which is just one hour away. After checking-in at your hotel and freshening up, head to Heidelberg Castle, which overlooks Heidelberg and is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. This castle will give you a glimpse of Renaissance era architecture and is surrounded by beautiful gardens with breathtaking views of the Rhine River. The Castle’s Great Barrel, the largest wine barrel in the world, is also on display here.
Day 2: Old Town and Karl Theodor Bridge
Spend the day exploring the Old Town, which is full of narrow medieval alleys and cobblestone streets. You can visit the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), which is located in the heart of the Old Town and admire its stunning architecture. Then stroll across Karl Theodor Bridge (also known as the Old Bridge) spanning over the Neckar River. This bridge is one of the most beautiful in Europe and offers a great view of the city both day and night.
Day 3: Philosopher’s Walk and Student Jail
Take a leisurely walk up the Philosopher’s Walk to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Heidelberg and the Neckar River. The walk is approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 km) and was named after philosophers and professors who used to hike here for inspiration. Later, head to the University Square and visit the historic Student Jail, where unruly students were imprisoned up to the end of the 19th century. Here, you can learn about the tradition of discipline of students, which is an important experience of German university life.
Day 4: Schwetzingen Palace and Gardens
Take a day trip to Schwetzingen Palace, which is located just 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Heidelberg. Schwetzingen is known for its beautiful palace and gardens. The palace was designed as a summer residence for the Prince-Elector of the Palatinate and is surrounded by picturesque gardens, fountains and ponds. In season, you can enjoy a stroll through blooming Turkish, Chinese and English gardens.
Day 5: Heidelberg Zoo and Botanical Garden
Spend the day appreciating nature with your visit to the Heidelberg Zoo, one of the best in Germany. Enjoy the beauty of diverse animal species from across the globe, in this exotic yet natural environment, combined with impressive lush greenery. As a bonus, the gardens at the Heidelberg Zoo also have amazing sea sights from its spacious layout so be sure to bring binoculars.
Day 6: Shopping and Nightlife
In the late morning, make your way to Heidelberg’s main pedestrian zone, “Hauptstrasse”, where you can indulge in some luxury shopping. Later in the evening, enjoy some of the popular bars and clubs in Heidelberg. Some of the popular spots include Halle02, Karlstor, and O’Reilly’s Irish Pub.
Day 7: Departure
On your final day in Heidelberg, you can relax and soak up your final moments in the city. Take one last stroll through the beautiful historic streets of the Old Town or even visit the Heidelberg University, one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Germany. After having lunch at one of the traditional German taverns in the city center, you will check out of your hotel and take a train or rent a car back to Frankfurt International airport for your flight back home.
