Day 1: Arrival and Local Sightseeing
As soon as you arrive in Agra, check-in at your hotel to freshen up after a long journey. After that, start your day by visiting the legendary Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. One of the world’s greatest sights, the breathtaking structure was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. After spending a couple of hours there, head to Agra Fort, one of the most imposing forts of India. The fort was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century and further enhanced by his grandson, Shah Jahan. Before leaving the fort, make sure to visit the Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Am – two of its most striking structures.
Day 2: Visit the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah and the Kinari Bazaar
On your second day, visit another famous mausoleum of Agra – the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, also known as Baby Taj. Located on the bank of Yamuna River, this elegant tomb was commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. After that, head to Kinari Bazaar, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Agra. Here, you can shop for traditional artifacts, jewelry, handicrafts, clothing, and souvenirs.
Day 3: Take a Heritage Walk Through the City
On the third day, go on a heritage walk and learn about the city’s history and culture. The tour will take you to some of Agra’s magnificent heritage sites, including the Jama Masjid, Chini Ka Rauza, and Guru Ka Taal. One highlight of the tour is the visit to the Mosque of Mariam-uz-Zamani, which was built by Emperor Akbar for his Hindu wife. After the walk, head to Panchhi Petha, a famous sweet stall in Agra, and enjoy some delicious pethas (sweet local delicacy).
Day 4: Visit Fatehpur Sikri and the Tomb of Akbar
On the fourth day, take a short road trip to Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a ghost town. Built in the 16th century by Emperor Akbar, the city’s abandoned palaces and mosques are still in excellent condition. Make sure to visit the Panch Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and Jodha Bai’s Palace. On your way back, stop by the Tomb of Akbar, located in the peaceful suburbs of Agra.
Day 5: Take a Cooking Class and Dine With a Local Family
On the fifth day, experience the cultural and gastronomic world of Agra. Start the day by taking a cooking class and learning how to prepare local dishes such as biryani, kebabs, and curries. The class will also teach you about the spices and herbs used in Indian cuisine. After that, visit a local family and join them for a traditional Indian lunch or dinner. You’ll have an opportunity to interact with the family members and learn about their way of life and customs.
Day 6: Marvel at the Mehtab Bagh and Red Fort
On the sixth day, start by visiting the Mehtab Bagh, a lush green garden complex on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River. From here, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the Taj Mahal and take stunning photographs. After that, explore one of the most remarkable forts in India, the Red Fort of Agra. This fort was built by Emperor Akbar in 1565, and was further developed by his grandson, Shah Jahan.
Day 7: Go Shopping and Experience the Nightlife in Agra
On the last day of your trip, take a stroll in the Sadar Bazaar and Kinari Bazaar, and indulge in some last-minute shopping. Don’t miss exploring Sadar Bazaar’s hidden alleys filled with shops selling traditional clothing, bangles, spices, and sweets. In the evening, experience Agra’s nightlife by sipping on cocktails, listening to local music, and enjoying dinner at one of the many bars and restaurants in the city.
