Trip to Merida, Mexico
Day 1: Arrival & Explore the City
Upon arrival at Manuel Crescencio Rejon International Airport, you’ll be greeted by our guide and transferred to your hotel. Once you’ve settled in, you can start exploring the city. A great starting point is the Historic Center which contains most important historical buildings in Merida. The main plaza, Plaza Grande, is not to be missed here. This open square is surrounded by various significant buildings in the region such as the Governor’s Palace and the Merida Cathedral. After a satisfying lunch, visit the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. This museum celebrates the history and heritage of the Maya civilization. Another popular site to visit would be the La Casa del Mayab Museum, which is a house turned into a museum to display local art and traditional textiles from the Mayan culture.
Day 2: Celestun Biosphere Reserve
On Day 2, leave early in the morning for the Celestun Biosphere Reserve. This is a must-visit destination for those who admire natural beauty. This peaceful place is a lagoon surrounded by mangrove trees and is home to the pink flamingos (among other bird-life) which is why Celestun is renowned for its wide array of wildlife. Take a small tour boat to see and learn about the bio-diversity of this untouched region. It is an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with the flamingos and other bird species. After the boat tour, take a dip in the calm freshwater stream nearby or enjoy the white sandy beaches.
Day 3: Uxmal, Kabah, and Sayil Ruins
Today you’ll be exploring the famous Mayan ruins in the southern area of the Yucatan Peninsula. Depart early from your hotel to visit the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Puuc style of architecture is what sets these ruins apart from other nearby sites. Kabah, another ancient Mayan city, is a short drive southwest from Uxmal. These ruins are also known for their unique architectural features, particularly the impressive facade of the Palace of the Masks. Lastly, the Sayil ruins, just north of Kabah, are also full of surprises with its intricate detailing that cannot be seen anywhere else.
Day 4: Shopping in Downtown
On day 4, take advantage of the opportunity to shop for local souvenirs and handicrafts in the area surrounding the plaza. There are many local shops owned by artisans who craft traditional Yucatecan products. Visit the well-known Lucas De Galvez Market for some of the freshest produce in the region as well as great food options for lunch. While shopping, do not miss out on trying Yucatecan-style tamales, a popular Mexican dish. The local chocolate shops are also great for tasting some traditional chocolate from the region.
Day 5: Cenote Hopping
On day 5, leave early in the morning to explore some of the stunning cenotes that the area has to offer. Cenotes are natural swimming holes that are created when underground rivers or water systems break through the limestone crust, revealing crystal-clear waters. Cenote Sambula and Cenote Noh Mozon are the top picks for the day. These cenotes are also surrounded by impressive trees and fauna that make it a serene location for taking photos or just relaxing by the cool waters.
Day 6: Hacienda Tour
On day 6, travel just outside Merida to experience the region’s rural charm by visiting one of the many restored haciendas in the region. Hacienda Sotuta de Peon is perfect for experiencing the history of Yucatan’s urban/rural framework. Take a tour of the original machinery once used to process henequen (a type of agave plant), an important crop for the region in the 19th century. Afterwards, take a horse-drawn carriage, included with your entrance fee, around the hacienda grounds. The last stop is the Cenote Sambula for another breathtaking experience.
