Trip to Fez, Morocco
Day 1: Arrival and Rest
Once you arrive in Fez, Morocco, you’ll probably be a bit tired from your journey. Consider spending the day relaxing at your accommodations to help you adjust to the climate and take in your surroundings. Morocco is known for its hot, dry weather, and Fez has many beautiful parks, gardens, and museums to explore. You could also explore the old town area, or medina, that surrounds many of the city’s historic sites.
Day 2: Explore Fez’s Old Medina
Fez is the oldest imperial city in Morocco, and much of its history remains intact. Start your day with a traditional Moroccan breakfast served in your accommodations, and then explore the old medina. The streets here are narrow, winding and filled with intriguing sights, sounds and smells. Consider taking a guided tour through the winding alleyways of the medina, which will take you past old palaces, hammams, fountains, and markets. Visit the 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa, Dar Batha Museum, Tannery Chouara, the Merenid Tombs, and a host of other historical sites.
Day 3: Volubilis and Meknes
Another must-see destination in Morocco from Fez is the Roman Empire’s Volubilis Ruins. This ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located about 80 km from Fez. On the way to Volubilis, visit the small charming city of Meknes where you could explore, Moulay Ismail’s Tomb and Granaries of Moulay Ismail.
Day 4: Explore Fez’s Modern City
Spend your day visiting the new city and appreciate its European influenced architecture and art culture. Visit the Jardin Jnan Sbil, a large park in the center of the new city with a lake, plenty of gardens, and a beautiful pavilion. Get a sense of Morocco’s contemporary art scene at the Belghazi Museum, or visit the art galleries, including Galerie BelArt, Galerie d’Art Damgaard and others.
Day 5: Visit Chefchaouen, the Blue Town
Take a day trip to Chefchaouen, known as “the blue town”. It’s a picturesque mountain town filled with blue-hued buildings and streets. This ancient place has been reputed for centuries as the “rifle’s powder granary”. It’s only about a 3-hour drive from Fez, so it can be done as a day trip.
Day 6: Shopping and Local Cuisine
Head out to explore the souks (markets) of Fez for a day of shopping for local textiles, pottery, spices, jewelry, and leather goods. If you’re up for trying authentic Moroccan food, you can check out some of the city’s culinary hotspots. Don’t miss the chance to try Tagine or Harsha (pancake). Fassi Saffron, Noujoum, and Dar El Ghalia are great places for Moroccan food and culture.
Day 7: Hammam and Departure
On your final day, consider getting pampered at a traditional Moroccan hammam or spa for a relaxing end to your trip. Once you’ve finished your Hammam experience, you can pack up your things and take one last walk around the old medina before departing from Fez.
