Trip to Nitra, Slovakia
Day 1: Arrival & Exploring the City
Upon arrival in Nitra, check-in at a comfortable hotel downtown, drop off your luggage and start exploring the city. The best place to start is at the heart of the city Torso, which offers a mix of modern and traditional shopping, along with a variety of restaurants and cafes.
After exploring the Torso, you can then make your way up to the top of the Nitra Castle, which offers a stunning view of the city and the surrounding hills. Spend the rest of the day leisurely exploring the city and getting a feel for its culture.
Day 2: Nitra & Zobor Mountain Tour
On the second day, take a tour to the Nitra and Zobor mountain. The tour includes a visit to the St. Emmeram’s Cathedral, which is considered a national heritage site. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings in Nitra, built in the 14th century, and adorned with a baroque organ, gorgeous frescoes and medieval artifacts.
After the Cathedral, the tour will take you to the Zobor Mountain, where you can take a hike up to the peak and enjoy panoramic views of the city. You can also visit the Zobor Monastery, which is said to be the resting place of St. Svorad and St.Benedict.
Day 3: Exploring the City
Today, explore some of the lesser-known landmarks of Nitra. Start by visiting the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which is the oldest church in the city and was built in the 11th century.
Next, you can visit the Nitra Synagogue, which has been converted into the Slovakian Museum of Jewish Culture. The museum provides an insight into the history and lives of the Jewish population of Slovakia before World War II.
In the evening, head over to the city’s main square, where you can find a variety of bars and clubs serving both local and international drinks.
Day 4: Trip to Bojnice Castle
Take a day trip from Nitra to the Bojnice Castle, located roughly an hour’s drive away. This medieval castle is one of the most stunning castles in Europe, and was constructed primarily in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park and a world-famous spa.
Explore the castle’s medieval architecture, antiques, and collections that offer a glimpse into the rich Slovakian heritage. You can also take a tour of the castle’s famed ghost chamber, which is said to be haunted by the spirit of the Black Lady.
Day 5: Spa and Relaxation Day
After a few days of exploring, it’s time to take a break and unwind. Start your day with a relaxing visit to the Nitra Spa, which offers a range of thermal and relaxation treatments. You can try a variety of saunas, whirlpool baths, and thermal pools to pamper your senses.
After your visit to the spa, you can head out to one of the many bars and cafes to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while reading a book or enjoying the scenery.
Day 6: Exploring Local Cuisine
Slovakia is renowned for its rich cuisine, and today is a perfect day to discover it. Take a cooking class, where you can learn how to prepare traditional Slovakian dishes, such as potato pancakes, dumplings, and sauerkraut. The cooking class will give you a chance to interact with locals and learn about the culture and traditions of Slovakia.
After your cooking class, take a food tour of the city, where you can taste local delicacies such as the popular Nitra pie, halusky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese), and other traditional Slovakian cuisine.
Day 7: Shopping & Departure
On your final day, spend some time shopping and buying souvenirs to take back home. If you’re a fan of handmade goods, the Handmade Concertino Nitra is the place to be. This folk fair celebrates culture and art, and offers local artists a platform to showcase their creations.
