Trip to Bern, Switzerland
Day 1: Arrive in Bern and Explore the Old Town
Upon arrival in Bern, check into your hotel and get settled in. In the afternoon, head out to explore the city’s charming Old Town. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful medieval buildings - some of which date back to the 15th century. Visit landmarks such as the magnificent Zytglogge clock tower, the Münster Cathedral, and the iconic Bundeshaus Parliament Building. End your day with a delightful stroll along the Aare River, which flows through the city.
Day 2: Discover Bern’s Museums
Bern has numerous world-class museums, and today you can explore some of the best. A few notable museums are the Bern Historical Museum, which showcases the story of Bern from prehistoric times to the present day; the Einstein Museum, dedicated to one of the most famous scientists of the 20th century; and the Museum of Fine Arts, which houses works from acclaimed Swiss artists. In the evening, head to the Matte district, where you can find some of the best bars and restaurants in the city.
Day 3: Visit Bern’s Botanical Gardens and Bear Park
Start your day with a relaxing walk through the Botanical Gardens at the University of Bern, which features over 6,000 plant species from all over the world. Afterwards, make your way to the famous Bear Park, where you can see Bern’s iconic bears up close and learn about their history in the city. In the afternoon, take a scenic hike up to Gurten Hill to take in the stunning view of the city from above.
Day 4: Explore the Bernese Alps
Take a day trip to explore the majestic Bernese Alps. Travel to the nearby town of Grindelwald to take a cable car up to the top of Mount First, where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps. Alternatively, visit the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, to experience the beauty of the Swiss Alps. Upon returning to Bern, consider having dinner at one of the city’s many fondue restaurants.
Day 5: City Walking Tour and Shopping
Embark on a guided walking tour of the city to learn about Bern’s history, culture and traditions. Your guide will show you some of the lesser-known areas of Bern, including some hidden gems and new developments. Then it’s time to indulge in some shopping! Bern has many shopping options, including some international luxury brands and locally-owned boutique stores. It’s a great place to shop for Swiss watches, chocolates, and Swiss army knives.
Day 6: Day Trip to Lake Geneva
Take a scenic train ride from Bern to Lake Geneva, and explore the charming town of Montreux. Visit the famous Chillon Castle, situated on the banks of the lake, and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Swiss Riviera. You might also want to explore the Lavaux Vineyards, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sample some of the world-class wines produced in the region.
Day 7: Visit Bern’s Farmer Market and the Rosengarten
Start your final day with a visit to the Bern Farmer Market. This bustling market offers a wide range of local produce, including fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and cured meats. Afterward, take a relaxing walk through the Rosengarten, which offers a panoramic view of the city, the Alps, and the Aare River. Finally, head to Bärengraben, where you can see bears in their natural habitat and have a relaxing picnic before you head back home.
